woodbridge mill

heritage extension

full architectural service to completion

fontmell magna, dorset

a green oak framed extension was sensitively inserted between two grade II listed structures comprising a historic watermill and adjacent millers cottage. the extension introduced a physical connection between the two elements for the first time while simultaneously providing an extensively glazed living space with southerly aspect that contrasted profoundly with the heavy masonry and smaller, punched windows of the historic buildings. the project entailed working closely with the north dorset conservation team to arrive at a design solution that respected the heritage of the host buildings, while meeting the clients’ practical needs and transforming the utility of the buildings as a home.
